Real estate clerk Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) goes on the lam with $40,000 in cash and hopes to start a new life. Paranoid and exhausted, she stops for the night at the Bates Motel. The twitchy manager Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) is nervous but personable and regales her with curious stories about his mother. As Marion settles in to her room, she soon learns that the Bates Motel is a bad place to take a shower.
